Conditions we treat

Substance Use Disorder

Substance use disorder is a medical condition in which use of alcohol or drugs continues despite causing problems with health, relationships, work or daily life.

What it can look like

  • Using more, or for longer, than intended
  • Wanting to cut down but not being able to
  • Cravings or strong urges to use
  • Problems at work, school or home because of use
  • Needing more to get the same effect, or withdrawal symptoms

Only a qualified clinician can make a diagnosis. Many of these experiences overlap with other conditions.

How we help

We treat substance use alongside the mental health conditions that often go with it, without judgment. Care may include medication, therapy and coordination with other services when more support is needed.

All care at EKM Psychiatry is delivered by secure telehealth across New York.

AUDIT-C alcohol use questionnaire

Private: your answers stay on your own device. They are scored in your browser and are never sent to EKM Psychiatry or saved. This is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.

These questions are about your use of alcohol.

1. How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?
2. How many drinks containing alcohol do you have on a typical day when you are drinking?
3. How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?

AUDIT-C (Bush et al., 1998; cut-offs Bradley et al., 2007), from the WHO AUDIT (Babor et al., 2001). Free for clinical use.
